Baltic sea

Background of Baltic Sea
Baltic Sea is located in Eastern Europe. Baltic Sea is surrounded by nine developed countries, such as Sweden, Germany and Russia.  Up until the 1960’s the Baltic Sea had been relatively unharmed and unpolluted by its surrounding countries.  After 1960’s, the water of Baltic Sea began to be heavily polluted.  Pollution comes primarily from factory waste products and agricultural runoff, coming from the bordering countries and the western countries.  The future and life quality of 90 million people are affected by the Baltic Sea environment.

Effects of Baltic Sea pollution

Experts say that the Baltic Sea’s rich biodiversity is threatened by environmental pollution. This could cause irreversible damage to a sea that is an important source of economic and recreation for more than 80 million people who live along its coast and within its catchment area. The sea is very important to the tourism and fishing industries of the Baltic countries. Species of fish, such as herring, sprat, and cod, are affected by pollution from urban areas, industries, and agriculture (fertilizers). The goal of the Baltic nations is to reduce the amount of pollution which reaches the Baltic Sea in order to preserve the precious fishing and tourism trade in each country.
